Spain judge: driving schools can charge women learners more

  1. Hi guys,
I think that, in spite of the judge decision, this is a clear case of sexual discrimination whithout doubts. And because of that, I strongly encourage Spain’s Women’s Institute to petition for the matter to be taken to the Constitutional Court because I'm sure that unequality should be always considered not contitutional. And what is more, in my opinion, it should be considered a real agression against human rights.

Unfortuntely, it isn't the only case, and there are similar situations that happen everyday and everywhere.

In fact, I think I'm not the only girl who has been invited to a disco that offers girls cheaper tickets than boys. This case, from my point of wiew, it's also a sexual heavy discrimination in the sense that, in spite of the fact that girls can apparently take advance of the cheaper prices, they are offering themselves like game for boys who are thought to be hunters looking for a prey.

Not to mention the fact that a foreing University, I don't remember which one, suggested some years ago, the possibility that girls were required to have less marks than boys in order to be accepted in identical courses.

I neither agree traffic lights in Cáceres are different for men and women.

Nowadays, positive discrimination issues are thought, according to experts, to be necessary in order to get a real equality. For instance, here in Spain, we've the Quotes Law (Ley de Cuotas) that rules, for example, the equality in Parlamient. But, definitely, I don't like them. Maybe because I would prefer politics wouldn't have to take this kind of arguments. I mean, I think equality won't be a reality while these decisions have to be taken.

    See you in class!

  2. I do agree with much of the judge´s conclusions. Mr. Albar has plainly achieved to separate the most common but at the same time wrong vision of our society about this topic, from the fact that the company only aimed to find a more profitable merchandising sale.
From my point of view the company is basing their arguments on stadistics that they have chosen cunningly on their own benefit. That is not a crime. We shouldn’t be concerned for that sort of business technique.
On the contrary, it would be quite different for instance, if the company only lowered their prices to handsome boys or cute girls, because in that way they wouldn’t be able to make a reasonable basis to support that concept.
So, at this point of the discussion, we should only ask one key question: Has the company idea been injurious for women?
Anyway, we´d better throw far away our stereotypes about men and women (notice I wrote men before women …lol..) since we are prone to classify people because of their supposed behavior. Although everyone does, publicist do, companies also do, nobody says nothing, we are witnesses of that and we don´t act in this sense. I want to highlight that this is not the case in the judge’s verdict.
We don´t live in a fair world, that´s certainly true.

  3. I’m a dreadful driver. I had to take a lot more lessons than the average to be prepared for my driving exams, and even so I failed it. My instructor used to tell me I was a magnet for obstacles, especially for lorries coming in the opposite direction. After taking another bunch of lessons, I finally passed it, but I kept being a dangerous driver because I fell asleep very easily. Therefore, you can figure out why I gave up driving.
There are some researches, related to the human brain, confirming that men have a better sense of direction than women as a consequence of the millennia, in prehistory times, when women stayed at home taking care of the children while men were devoted to hunt and to find suitable places to dwell.
Nevertheless, I know women who drive better than some men. Women are usually more calm and sensible. Most of men go berserk on the slightest incident. Besides, I doubt statistics because they can be manipulated to lead us to certain conclusion or its opposite one. Anyway, I think this is a clear case of sexual discrimination
Another completely different thing is whether the judge ruled justly or not. As I passionate defender of freedom, I’m of the opinion that nobody have the right of imposing a price policy in a private business. A private company can set its prices as it pleases. Clients are the ones who must display their agreement of disagreement with the company policy by contracting or not its services. If this company loses clients, women and men, because of its sexual discrimination, it’ll change its prises. Or maybe, other driving schools will take advantage of the situation by offering lower prices to women. On the other hand, we pay taxes and delegate force use (resorting to violence) to judges and police for them to enforce the law. I’m not a lawyer, but I think that kind of sexual discrimination, this driving school is exhibiting, is no acceptable within Spanish law. Consequently, I’m indecisive.
