  1. First, I’d like to share with my classmates this vocabulary about this article:
To single out = to choose; to distinguish (hacer resaltar)
To laud [lɔ:d] = VT (liter) alabar, elogiar
To lodge complaints = presentar quejas.
Lodge [lɒdʒ] N (at gate of park) casa del guarda; [of porter] portería; (Freemasonry) logia; (=hunting lodge) pabellón de caza; (Univ) (master's) rectoría.
To lodge: VT [person] alojar, hospedar; [object] colocar, meter; [complaint] presenter; [statement] prestar; (Jur) [appeal] interponer. VI (=reside) alojarse, hospedarse (with con, en casa de); [object] (=get stuck) alojarse, meterse.

To shy away from something = huir or rehuir de algo

clear-cut [‘klɪə’kʌt] ADJ[decision, victory] claro; [statement] sin ambages

To embolden [ɪm’bəʊldən] somebody to do something VT = animar a alguien a hacer algo
bold [bəʊld] = ADJ brave (atrevido, audaz); forward (descarado); llamativo; en negrita; N negrita.

Secondly, in my opinion this article is very muddy and biased because it’s mixing up different issues. However, I agree that rewarding a statue is one of the silliest decisions I’ve ever heard. Besides it’s clear/obvious that this self-sacrificing, caring and devoted congregation doesn’t qualify for the gold medal of police merit though playing a praiseworthy roll in our society. As a catholic I think Catholic Church must renounce any kind of award following Jesus’ words: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” (Mark12:17). Accepting them only jeopardizes our reputation and credibility.

Regarding the statement “there are Catholic schools financed heavily by the state”, it’s simply a lie. Private catholic schools, like any other private school else, cannot be financed by the state. Only subsidized schools, whether catholic or protestant or cooperative or any other kind, can receive public funds as long as they fulfill the requirements established by law. Furthermore, they save a lot of money for the government because a study place in a subsidized school is nearly half of what it costs in a public school. That is why a subsidized school teacher earns significantly less than a public school teacher and there is no chance for embezzlement regarding this matter because they are directly paid by the State.

    1. Sorry, it's "to play a role" not "to play roll"

    2. This is no surprise for me, keeping in mind that our Goverment has already given us enough proof of its outdated, old-fashioned, stubborn and authoritative idea of what a secular country might be (abortion issue, unreasonable guarantee of minimum assignment of public funds for the catholic church, at the same time that cuts are being carried out in education or social security, taxes exeptioms…).
They show by giving that award to a statue, an insensitivity not only to all members of police forces, also to all agnostic, atheist, no catholic people, who are progressively more each time in Spain.
Anyway, maybe we really should put this sort of stupid acts into a proper context, keeping in mind that this man also had stated some months ago that the survival of the human beings was threatened with the homosexual marriage…

  2. You can sing in www.change.org in order to claim this award for Mortadelo and Filemón as well. They are also fiction characters and they have always stolled the Police's work in all their comics from 1958. Absolutely funny!! LOL
